4th. Annual Conference on Cardiology - Most modern therapeutic possibilities of cardiac problems deliberated

The 4th. annual conference on cardiology was held in RMI, on 26th. April-2008. Speaker cardiologists and cardiac surgeons from RMI, AFIC, CMH, Children Hospital Lahore and Shifa Hospital Islamabad, addressed this conference. During the conference cardiac incidence, it’s accurate diagnosis and modern therapeutic possibilities were discussed; an ongoing debate upon success of heart bypass surgeries in comparison to minimally invasive surgeries was also touched.

Stroke Update

Pakistan Stroke Society organized Stroke Update – One Day Symposium at RMI. Renowned neurologists of the country talked about the etiology, management modalities and preventive measures. Public awareness was declared to be essential for early diagnosis and better prognosis. Dr. Sardar Alam presently working as a Neurologist at RMI dilated on the signs and symptoms of the stroke. He described that major symptoms of stroke are numbness, weakness of face, arms and legs on one side of the body, inability to speak, double vision and loss of consciousness.

New Paediatric & Neonatal Unit

In its endeavor to become a centre of excellence, RMI has attained another significant milestone by establishing new Paediatric and Neonatal Unit on March 10, 2006. This 40 bedded modern ward has a dedicated Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of four beds, equipped with latest Phototherapy lamps, Infant Incubators and Cardiac Monitors in addition to other essential equipment. The Neonatal Unit consists of “intensive care”, “special care” baby unit (SCBU) and an adjoining “Lactation Room” for mothers. A section has been designated as a ‘Play Room’ to provide recreational facilities for the sick children.

Earthquake Relief Mission – Balakot

Rehman Medical Institute (RMI) dispatched a Relief Mission to the devastated area of Balakot in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan, on October 10, 2005. This area was one of the worst hit of the region after Muzzaffarabad, Kashmir. The mission comprised of a total of 20 volunteers which included doctors, nurses, paramedical and other support staff, and stayed in the area for a week. A camp was established in the early hours of October 11, 2005 adjacent to Balakot and immediately commenced medical and relief aid to the victims of the earth quake.

The 1st Annual Cardiology Update

The 1st Annual Cardiology Update was held at the Rehman Medical Institute on Saturday, 30th July, 2005. The event was held at the RMI auditorium and it commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran. This was followed by the opening address by Mr. Muhammad Saleem Jan, CEO, RMI. He spoke about the continual efforts by RMI to provide healthcare services to the people of the province. RMI’s efforts to provide training and development opportunities not only to its own staff members but other healthcare professionals in the province were outlined.

Dr. Abdul Rahim Khan, Consultant Cardiologist at RMI spoke about Acute Coronary Syndrome. It was stressed that initial assessment of patients presenting coronary symptoms should be cautious and accurate. Identification of heart attack and administration of timely treatment can save lives. He also talked about the importance of a healthy lifestyle which can delay the onset of disease in the genetically predisposed population.

Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Rehman Medical College

After three successful years of operation of the Rehman Medical Institute a groundbreaking ceremony was held on 25th March 2005 to officially start the construction work on the Rehman Medical College.

The Chairman RMI, Prof. Mohammad Rehman speaking on the occasion said; “There is no dearth of medical colleges in the country, but we at Rehman Medical Institute want to make our contribution by aiming to set a standard in medical education that others could strive to match, inshaAllah!” He thanked his teachers, friends, well wishers and staff for their continuous support and contribution. In his message Prof. Rehman appealed; “To the nation in general and to the medical community in particular I would like to say, let us set our priorities right, let us get rid of antagonism and renew our pledge and efforts for the uplift of our people. Let us leave behind something that our children and nation can be proud of. Otherwise, shattered will be our dignity, lost will be our pride and forgotten will be our names in the pages of history.”

Bypass Surgery performed on ‘beating heart’ by new team at RMI

A second new Cardiac Surgical team at the Rehman Medical Institute performed Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery, commonly known as ‘Bypass Surgery’ through the non conventional technique – with a ‘beating heart’.

Management of MRSA

A seminar titled “Management of MRSA” was held in the RMI Auditorium on 9th December 2004 in line with our efforts of continuously striving for the maintenance of the highest standards of hygiene. The seminar was attended by Senior Consultants of RMI along with the Medical Officers, Nurses and Paramedical staff. The speaker on the occasion was Dr. Shoukat Bangash, Diplomate American Board Infectious Disease Control, with Special Interest in TB, AIDS and other Sexually transmitted Diseases. He had been especially called in from Islamabad for the occasion.

New Procedure introduced in RMI

RMI is proud to announce that it has for the first time in the NWFP performed ASD Closure through a non surgical procedure, thus introducing an alternative to Open Heart Surgery. Atrial Septal Defect is a type of birth defect in which children are born with a ‘hole’ between two chambers of the heart. The result is increase blood flow to lungs, increase in blood pressure in lungs and ultimately heart failure and other serious complications. The disease is one of the most common birth defects affecting the heart.

RMI Anniversary

RMI celebrated its second anniversary on the 24th March 2004, marking two successful years of providing quality healthcare to the people of the region. It was with 5 year old Bibi Faiza as the first patient undergoing successful treatment in the newly opened RMI for Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), that the hospital was officially opened in the year 2002.
