Future Plans : Rehman Medical Trust

The purpose of establishing the Rehman Medical Institute in Peshawar was to provide ‘quality healthcare services' to the people of the region. The driving force behind this purpose was the mission of serving humanity selflessly and dedicatedly. But to establish and maintain a state of the art medical institution, constant generation of funds is required.

To serve the over one third of the unprivileged and needy population of Northern Pakistan and neighbouring Afghanistan , RMI had realized the need for establishing a fund to enable these equally deserving people to have access to quality healthcare services. Thus, a ‘Patient Welfare Society' was set up in February 2000 which has since been making a remarkable contribution in helping poor and needy patients, who could not afford the costs of treatment. The funds of this society have been able to save a number of precious lives, needing urgent and life saving surgeries in RMI, who otherwise were unable to afford any treatment. Moreover, the society has also conducted a free medical camp in the remote valley of Tirah , N.W.F.P, where RMI consultants treated over 2000 local residents free of cost. Pathology tests were performed on site and medicines were also given to all the patients free of cost.

Patient welfare society makes its earnings on the basis of donations and voluntary contributions. All contributions are being deposited in a separate bank account. Separate books of accounts are maintained and audited by an independent Chartered Accountant.

With the increasing need of the poor and needy patients of the region, the RMI management has now decided to form the Rehman Medical Trust, which would then be able to serve the unprivileged people on a larger scale. The PWS would then be merged into the Rehman Medical Trust and officially launched in the year 2004 once the registration process has been completed.

The RMT shall be formed on the basis of the following :

  • The Trust shall have an initial capital base made up of the funds available from the existing Patients' Welfare Society of Rehman Medical Institute.
  • The Trust shall be entitled for a fixed percentage, decided only by the Chairman Rehman Medical Institute, from income of the hospital and medical services of Rehman Medical Institute.
  • The Trust shall organize events, programs and projects for raising funds for its cause and may avail the print, electronic and digital media for that purpose.
  • The Trust shall accept donations from the federal government of Pakistan , the provincial governments, local government, foreign governments and expatriate communities, international donor/development agencies and associations working inside and outside Pakistan , philanthropists, well wishers and business organizations as well as other source(s) which support charitable causes.

The functions of the RMT shall include mainly the following :

  • The Trust shall be for the purpose of providing financial support required for the operating procedures, medicine, the equipment used in surgeries and medical facilities associated thereto to needy, poor and unprivileged patients admitted to Rehman Medical Institute who are in need of such assistance.
  • To partially cover and subsidize whenever and wherever required, the cost of all kinds of surgical and non-surgical procedures including cardiac and general medicine procedures.
  • The provision of finances in general surgeries so as to cover all or part of the costs where the life of the patient depends on such surgery being provided and the finances required are not enough or forthcoming from the patient or of the relatives.
  • To try to cater to all categories of patients in terms of funding and/or reimbursement of the hospital expenses for their respective treatments.
  • To provide financial support, wherever possible, to students, trainees and/or other professionals who are associated and/or registered with Rehman Medical Institute or any of its departments and/or affiliates for their professional and educational development in the areas of medical, paramedical technologies and nursing skills.
  • The generation, provision, collection, distribution and mobilization of funds required for all the above-mentioned purposes and functions of the Trust.
  • Creating awareness among the people, through education and promotion, as regards the various diseases and ailments that affect the human body and help them develop an informed approach towards their health.
  • The assessment of a patient's financial position for access to the Trust funds carried out on the standards and criteria laid down by the Founders.

The Rehman Medical Trust will ensure that care is available to all patients in need. Those who are unable to pay for treatment would receive generous assistance through a variety of subsidies and the Zakat Fund programme (to be introduced soon)

The RMC would help RMI fulfil its mission of providing high quality medical care to patients from all socio-economic groups – including patients from low to middle income groups. The subsidy provided by the Trust would enable accessibility to a larger population.

You can make a difference to someone's life. Your generous contributions to the Patient Welfare Programme will help the hospital continue to provide needy patients access to health care facilities where quality care can help save lives.
