Right from the time in 1991 when construction work started off on the RMI, it was meant to be more than just a hospital where patients would receive quality treatment of an international standard, it was meant to be an institution par excellence, where not only was quality healthcare provided to patients, but Faculties of various disciplines were to be managed by experts in different fields of medicine who would be given opportunities to impart quality postgraduate training to medical professionals.
After two successful years of functioning of the hospital, it was time to move on into the next phase of expansion. It had been a popular demand from various quarters since long, by people who saw the standard RMI had established for itself that facilities should be made available so that RMI could play its due role in the field of medical education. However, as with the hospital, this was not to be done in a rush, and everything was planned so that all required facilities would be made available. In 2002 the designing work was initiated on the fourth floor of the main building which had already been allocated for the purpose. Interior designers from Karachi were engaged to come up with designs for the various portions of the PGMT Centre. After a year of hard work, and tight schedules, we were able to meet our deadlines and finally on the 24 th of September 2003, Chief Minister NWFP, Akram Khan Durrani inaugurated the RMI-Postgraduate Medical Training Centre.
RMI-PGMT Centre comprises of a modern Auditorium with a seating capacity of 300. It is fully equipped with a state-of-the art sound system and multimedia projection facilities. The auditorium has been designed with the prime purpose of ‘teaching' in mind. Arrangements have also been made so that a direct video link exists between the auditorium and the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Operation Theatres so that delegates at conferences/seminars held in RMI and medical students can be shown various procedures without actually having to be present in the Operation Theatre or the Cath-Lab itself.
As per the PMDC & CPSP requirement for the PGMT recognition, the Centre also has a Library which is well stocked with books on various specialized medical subjects. The Library has been divided into various areas to include; Reference Section, Journal / Magazine Section and General Reading Zone.
For classroom teaching, two classes can be held simultaneously in the various classrooms each with a seating capacity of 50. In keeping with the requirements of this day and age, an IT Learning and Resource Centre is provided in the library where postgraduate students would have access to current research on the internet and also to a variety of medical journals available on compact discs.
RMI has applied to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan for the recognition of the PGMT. The registration process, expected to be completed in the third quarter of the year 2004 would then provide Fellowship training in various specialities. |
