Just like the RMI-PGMT Centre, the need for a medical school of international repute was felt back in 1991 when construction work on the RMI first started. As work proceeded, it was realized that the present premises would be insufficient for the other projects that would come along, and that it left no room for expansion.
There
in 1994, during a visit of the then Chief Minister of NWFP, Aftab
Ahmed Khan Sherpao, a request was made to the government to grant
permission so that RMI could procure the 24 kanal of land right
opposite the Rehman Medical Institute, which was then granted.
But, rather than to initiate the various projects
all at once, it was the intention to move one step at a time, first
waiting for the hospital to be established, so that the name RMI
symbolizes a place where patients could expect to receive the best
treatment available; an institution, the people are willing to trust
their lives with.
The need for a medical college has been long felt in the province, however in order to maintain the standards which RMI has set for itself, it was decided to move in a step-wise manner. Initially, facilities for the earlier years of medical education will be provided on the fourth floor of the main RMI building. However, at the same time various engineering and architectural firms from all over Pakistan have been contacted to come up with plans for the permanent campus of the Rehman Medical College . Work is in progress, and InshaAllah the project will be initiated in the near future.
The RMC will comprise of three major blocks to house facilities of a Medical College , Nursing College and a College of Paramedical Technologists , along with an attached free 150 bed hospital for teaching purposes of the medical students as per the requirements of the PMDC and CPSP.
