PESHAWAR: Commending his services for ailing humanity, Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani urged skilled people of other professions to follow in the footprints of noted cardiac surgeon, Dr Rehman and thus share the government burden. He was addressing a gathering following groundbreaking ceremony of Rehman Medical College (RMC) Opposite to state-of-Rehman Medical Institute (RMI) at Hayat Abad Town here on Friday. Durrani paid rich tribute to Dr Rehman for his outstanding services in cardiac surgery. He said Dr Rehman proved his devotion with his unprivileged Pakhtum brothers by investing all his assets for providing them quality health services at their doorsteps whatever he had collected during his entire practical life in Karachi.

Durrani said. “Gone are the days when people have to take their heart patients from this poor province to Karachi in public transport for Dr Rehman. Now our brother Dr Rehman is among us, and people within a few minutes can shift their patients to one of Pakistan’s best hospital.”

The chief minister said is a matter of honour for him when people from other provinces seek his assistance in getting appointment from the known cardiac surgeon. Admitting that government alone can ever provide all facilities of life to its masses Dr Rehman like skilled and dedicated people should come forward and contribute in their respective fields. He assured Dr Rehman of full support from the NWFP government in his services.

“You just make single telephone call and will find us for your help when ever needed.” the chief minister assured Dr. Rehman of his support.

After lauding RMI for offering quality health services, the chief minister disclosed that majority of population still can not even think to take their patients there because of heavy charges. “Though I had come to know that poor heat patient are being helped in the RMI, I would like to request Dr Rehman and his team to kindly bring their charges up to the level of common people.” Durrani suggested. He told the audience the NWFP government was aware of sufferings the heat patients are being faced with here, and that’s why the provincial government had decided to build a full-fledged hospital for cardiac ailments.

Through he did not mention when his government will give practical shape to the well-awaited project, Durrani said the proposed hospital and women medical university would be built together. “A team of experts would select suitable place for the project within a week.” Said the chief minister.

The seven-storey Rehman Medical College would be built on 25 kanal plot with an estimated cost of more than Rs 500 million According to RMI Administrator Col. (Retd) Mohammad Tariq, the college would admit 100 student annually. He said RMC would be equipped with the best and professional people having recognition in the their respective specialties.

Also, he said there would be latest diagnostic facilities in the college, first-ever in private sector in the country, 150-bed hospital, eight operation theatres, separate male and female hostels, and a mosque that will accommodate about 700 worshipers at a time.

Earlier, known cardiac surgeon and chairman RMI, Dr Rehman, in his brief speech said after successful experience of RMI they set is as a challenge to establish and institute that could provide quality education in the field of healthcare.

He said they learnt in their experience from RMI that key to providing quality healthcare service lies themselves. The RMC, he hoped, would strive to produce qualified doctors, nurses and paramedics.

“These professionals would not only be trained to be experts in their respective fields, but would also have ethical values instilled in them,” hoped the well-know cardiac surgeon, who belongs to Badhnai Village in suburbs of Peshawar. “Sadly to mention, that today’s society, many lack moral and ethical values, honesty-based practice has become a cruel joke amongst us. Let us all set our priorities right, let us get ride of antagonism and renew our pledge and efforts for the up life of our people.” He remarked.

Peshawar : March 9: Prominent cardiologist Prof Mohammad Rehman held a sumptuous dinner here on Friday night for national and international delegates attending the 15 th Biennial International Congress of Cardiology.

The dinner, held at professor's new 300-bed medical institute at Hayatabad Township , was attended besides the conference delegates, by local doctors, jurists, educationists and journalists. In his brief remarks on the occasion, he said his dream of giving his native province a valuable gift was realized in the shape of Rehman Medical Institute.

“RMI cannot only serve the people of NWFP but it is ideally located at the gateway to Afghanistan and Central Asia ,” he said. Prof Rehman, who served as a very successful cardiac surgeon in Karachi for 27 long years, said from the days of his student life serving humanity was his main motto and that is what he had done.

Gauging the mood of general public against the doctor's community in the recent tussle with the government, many may not agree with his statement. But few can challenge the fact that building a high quality medical facility in Peshawar is anything other than that.

Prof Rehman, reading from a written English speech, said due to non-availability of a high quality medical facility in Peshawar , patients had to travel to Lahore and Karachi . He promised to provide thorough professional treatment at the institute.

Taking benefit of his institute's proximity to Hayatabad Medical Complex, he even plans to upgrade his institute into an institute of medical sciences.

In a brief chat with the Statesman, the professor said he had initially started his institute with 50 beds which would be expanded later on.

Iftikhar opens free medical camp at Tirah

Khyber Agency : Governor Syed lftikhar Hussain Shah has said that improvements and development of communication facilities in the fur-flung and backward packets of FATA is at the top of 'the development priorities of the government, announcing that the under-construction road passing through Tirah Valley will be extended up to Sadda Town of Kurram Agency to improve the communication system in the entire area.

He was addressing a big Tribal jirga at Rajgal Kooki Khel area of Tirah Valley here on Sunday where the governor visited the free medical camp established by Rehman Medical Institute Peshawar under the patronage of the renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Muhammad Rehman.

The two-day free medical camp was participated by 13 surgeons and physi­cians besides paramedical staff of the institution and more than 2000 patients including male, female and children were not only treated but also provided with free medicines worth more than Rs I million. More than 200 diagnostic tests of the patients were also earned out freely, in the camp premises.

Addressing the tribal jirga, the governor highlighted the efforts which the government has been making during the last about three years for the speedy development in the tribal areas. In this connection, he also mentioned Rs 1 billion special package announced by President Musharraf for the development of the inaccessible tribal areas which has now been made accessible.

The governor said that this is an initiation of development process and assured the Jirga that during the ensuing three years almost all the basic development requirements of the people of these hitherto neglected tribal areas would be met according to their wishes and requirements.

He in this connection also mentioned another decision of the government saying that where needed the minimum educational and training qualification would be relaxed for the educated tribal youth.

Earlier, on arrival at Rajgal area of the Tirah valley the governor was warmly received by the tribal elders. Later he visited the medical camp and talked to the doctors and patients present there.

The governor on this occasion formally launched a water supply scheme recently completed at a cost of Rs. 350.000 out of the political development fund. The scheme would benefit the residents of' the entire locality.

People urged to get their children vaccinated

NWFP Health Minister Dr Meher Taj Roghani has urged the people to take preventive measures against diseases and vaccinate their children in time to save them from falling prey to deadly epidemics.

Inaugurating the vaccination centre at Rehman Medical Institute (RMI) at Hayatabad Township on Friday night, she lamented that even the people belonging to medical community did not get their children vaccinated, let alone the general public.

Prevention .was far better than cure, she stressed, because it was" less expensive than treat­ment, and the poor county like Pakistan could not afford spend­ing huge sum of money on the treatment of the people.

She administrated vaccine to a six-month-old child Deyan to declare open the first vaccination centre in the private sector.

Dr Roghani was all praise for the management of the RMI for its endeavors to help the people in getting their children vaccinated. There was a strong need to sensitize the people regarding the preventive measures against killer diseases, because these were cost-effective as well as result-oriented, said the minister, who herself is a retired pediatrician. The vaccination ratio in the province was 75 per cent in 1970 which had declined to a figure of less than 55 per cent in 2002, she deplored.

She said even Bangladesh and India had successfully conducted the vaccination drives where as in Pakistan , the infective diseases were taking a heavy toll on the people. Abuse of syringes was the main cause of hepatitis in this part of the country, because 70 per cent of the hepatitis patients were infected through syringes.

RMI Founder: On the occasion, RMI founder Prof Dr Mohammad Rehman said the sole purpose to establish the. RMI in the province was to give a gift to its people.

A large number of medical community people, including Dr Sirajuddin Ahmed, Dr Mohammad Kabir, Dr Syed Kiramat Ali Shah, Dr Syed Iftikhar Ali Shah, Dr Mian Naushad Ali, Dr Khadimullah Kakakhel, Dr Mukhtiar Zaman Afridi and others were present on the occasion.
