Surgeon Mohammad Rehman
(Founder & Chairman)

Hailing from a remote village of Budhni , an area 10kms to the East of Peshawar in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan was a young Muhammad Rehman having earned a scholarship from school, sent to the Islamia College Peshawar, with the sole desire of serving his nation. It was upon the insistence of his grandfather, that he had to give up his dream of defending his country by joining the armed forces and instead earned an MBBS Degree from the Khyber Medical College , Peshawar in 1967.

It was at a time when the future of his career was to be decided that his senior teachers encouraged the young Dr. Rehman to opt for General Surgery instead of specializing in a rare and difficult specialty like Cardiac Surgery. The challenge that Cardiac Surgery posed was tempting for Dr. Rehman to accept for his future. Thus, having completed Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery from the Royal College of Edinburgh in 1975, he returned to Pakistan with a sense of purpose and devotion to serve his people.

It was a time when surgery upon the heart was an idea completely unheard of in Pakistan . But having given up the comfort and bright career prospects in England , Dr. Rehman was here to revolutionize the ailing lives of cardiac patients in Pakistan . For that success to be achieved, he had a long journey to fight through. Putting to use his skill of operating upon the heart patients when no one was willing to undergo a surgery that was rarely performed here, was one challenge, but then the absence of trained staff had forced the young Dr. Rehman to play the role of a surgeon, a medical officer, a technician and a nursing assistant all at the same time. This required him to spend the first 24 hours of the surgery with the patient and the same practise was continued for 10 years until Dr. Rehman had prepared a fully trained and professional team for Cardiac Surgery.

But eventually, it all paid off. At the end of a 28 year career in NICVD, retiring as a Professor of Cardiac Surgery, Prof. Rehman has not only performed more than 20,000 cardiac surgeries, but also trained 21 Cardiac Surgeons, now working across the country and abroad.

Prof. Rehman's dedication strictly remained concentrated upon providing his services to the patients and imparting education to young surgeons , which was why he declined the offer of the post of Director NICVD and also then the post of Sindh Health Minister in October 1999. It was for this devotion to his field, that he was awarded one of the highest civil awards of the country, the Sitara-e-Imtiaz presented to him in the year 2002.

Yet, his 28 years of service in Karachi could not satisfy Prof . M Rehman himself; feeling his mission of serving humanity was not fully accomplished. It was his lifelong dream to present a gift to the people of his birthplace, NWFP.

The gift in the shape of the Rehman Medical Institute was to provide “quality healthcare services” to the people of the region and also employment opportunities to hundreds of families. Thus in early 2002, Prof. M Rehman moved to his hometown, Peshawar to devote the remaining part of his career to serving the ailing humanity through the Rehman Medical Institute.
